I won my round last night at the Funniest Person in the Twin Cities contest! Everyone else was a no-show.

Still a victory though. I know because I got a prize — a DVD of the film “Punching the Clown” which I look forward to watching.

If I earned enough points from the judges during my set, I’ll move on to the finals at the end of the month, but I wouldn’t count on it. There are numerous talented comics in this town with a lot more stage time.

I’m optimistic this will just lead to me getting out more, ever, for open mics and creating more comedy. This is something I’ve always wanted to do.

The Huffington Post recently ran an article titled “Small Wonders” which addressed the status of miniature books in publishing. The author cited my column for IndieReader as a sign of the small book’s health and success.

It was nice to be name-dropped and I’m glad for the press. You can read the full article here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/04/miniature-books-akai_n_1478064.html

I should note that while my column is titled “Mini Fete,” the term applies to mini-comics which are self-published and often have small print-runs but are not always, necessarily, small in size and very regularly look like 5.5″x8.5″ booklets. Not exactly the type of tiny book they probably meant to highlight in the article.

Truly, the naming conventions used by people within the indie press world can be confusing: art book, zine, mini-comic, indie press, small press, perzine, etc. It’s not surprising that an incorrect conclusion about content was drawn from my column’s title.

While the whole world goes digital, and traditional publishing loses its grip, it’s interesting to see how the world still manages to “judge a book by its cover.”

The results have been tallied: We won! Paper Darts was the victor of last month’s literary smackdown against The Tangential.

tkTwinCities was at the event and reported that Sarah Morean, a PD girl, got a lot of laughs out of the crowd by telling a true and very lame story about her dating life back in high school. I may have cried. Especially when she said, “Andreas was my first mostly non-gay boyfriend.”

Aw. Thanks! I may have cried too, for other reasons.

The full piece will appear in my upcoming zine Lady Bits #1 which will debut at the Chicago Zine Fest in March.

I took a trip to Seattle and Portland recently to visit some shops and a few friends.

In Portland I made my way to Floating World Comics and Reading Frenzy. Floating World had just moved into a new corner location around the block from their old location. Their new store has a lot of nice natural light and I found some good books and zines there I hadn’t seen anywhere else.

Reading Frenzy was a nice, small store and I bought a back-issue of the fashion journal WORN.

In Seattle I went to the Fantagraphics store and enjoyed looking through their backroom full of scratch and dent deals.
